Differentiation in the genetic basis of stem trichome development between cultivated tetraploid cotton species

چکیده

Abstract Background Cotton stem trichomes and seed fibers are each single celled structures formed by protrusions of epidermal cells, were found sharing the overlapping molecular mechanism. Compared with fibers, cotton more easily observed, but mechanisms underlying their development still poorly understood. Results In this study, Gossypium hirsutum ( Gh ) G. barbadense Gb) to differ greatly in percentages varieties/accessions glabrous stems trichome density, length, number per trichopore. varieties normally had long singular clustered trichomes, while Gb short trichomes. Genetic mapping using five F 2 populations from crosses between those different types revealed that much variation among phenotypes could be accounted for combinations genes/alleles on Chr. 06 24. The twenty- six 1 generations varied phenotypes, further suggesting tetraploid controlled genes/alleles. modern varieties, a greater proportion wild accessions or shorter denser trichomes; whereas smaller primitive stems. A close correlation fuzz fiber density was observed both varieties. Conclusion Based these findings, we hypothesize evolved parallel during domestication cultivated cotton. addition, current results illustrated can used as morphological index quality conventional breeding.

Genetic basis for glandular trichome formation in cotton

Trichomes originate from epidermal cells and can be classified as either glandular or non-glandular. Gossypium species are characterized by the presence of small and darkly pigmented lysigenous glands that contain large amounts of gossypol. Here, using a dominant glandless mutant, we characterize GoPGF, which encodes a basic helix-loop-helix domain-containing transcription factor, that we propo...

Transfer of Reniform Nematode Resistance from Diploid Cotton Species to Tetraploid Cultivated Cotton

The reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) is a semi-endoparasitic organism in which the female penetrates the root cortex establishing a permanent feeding site (Robinson et al., 1997). It has become a serious threat to cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production in Arkansas and the mid-South (Zhao et al., 2000) because yield losses in infested fields may exceed 50% under stress conditions ...

DNA Polymorphisms of Genes Involved in Fiber Development in a Selected Set of Cultivated Tetraploid Cotton

The lack of genetic diversity within cultivated upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) has hindered the construction of genomewide linkage maps and their applications in genetics and breeding. The objective of this investigation was to develop candidate gene markers for fi ber quality and yield on the basis of approximately 90 genes implicated in fi ber development. Polymorphisms using sequence-...
